Students pursuing a career in medicine can receive medical school grants to help pay for college. Grants for medical school come from a variety of sources; the government assist low-income students though their federal grant programs and certain departments of universities have medical grants / fellowships for conducting doctoral research. In addition, several organizations that specialize in medicine support students with medical school scholarships and grants through both need-based and merit-based criteria.

The federally funded need-based grant programs are available to medical students pursuing a first degree at undergraduate level and include the Pell and FSEOG. These are awarded to students who demonstrate financial need and come from low-income backgrounds, and the completion of a FAFSA is the only way to access the federal student aid programs. In addition to the need-based grants, federal loans are available to medical students who qualify for financial aid; both subsidized and unsubsidized loans could be available through the Stafford and Perkin loan programs.

After completing you undergraduate degree, you will likely find that further education to degree and doctoral level will involve research projects. A large number of medical student grants are to fund research projects. These funds come from a variety of organizations that have a stake in supporting advanced medical students research in return for recognition for first-class medical innovations and advanced medical breakthroughs that result from the students’ research projects. Some of the most notable organizations that support students are:

  • The Howard Hughes Medical Institute: offers several research fellowship grants that fund the research conducted by advanced level medical students.
  • The New York Academy of Medicine: offers a variety of grants and fellowships to medical students, seasoned physicians and investigators to support the advancement of health care studies.
  • The National Institutes of Health: are the leading source for government backed research grants for medical students.

The American Medical Student Association run a Local Project Grants Award Program, which provides 24 grants to projects carried out by medical students directed on community-based medicine. These grants provide students with the opportunity to manage projects that teach them valuable skills at the same time as enhancing the community.

Minority students from Native American backgrounds can receive grants through the American Indian Graduate Center to assist them in pursuing medical related careers. Hispanic and African American medical students can also receive medical school grants through the American Psychiatric Association.

When pursuing a degree in a medically related field of study, many students graduate with student loan debts totalling over $100,000. It is important that you find grants that will assist you in funding your career.

If you research carefully, you will unearth numerous opportunities to fund your medical education and research projects with school grant money thus reducing your student debts whilst working towards your degree.
