Student nurses pursuing a college degree can receive nursing school grants to help cover the cost of their education. Because nurses are in high demand many different organizations provide grants to help pay for nursing school, leading sources of free money include the federal and state governments.

The federal government invests a lot of money in assisting student nurses’ access higher education and grants are available to both men and women entering into health care careers. To qualify students must be enrolling in a fulltime accredited undergraduate nursing program and agree to work in an underrepresented critical shortage nursing institution for a minimum of two years after graduation.

In addition to federal funding, because nurses are in high demand, most state governments offer financial incentive packages to for student nurses in order to offset the shortage of qualified nursing staff in state-based facilities.

A good example of state grants for nursing school students is the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority. Every year the North Carolina government provide more than 400 merit-based nursing scholarship programs worth up to $6,000 to students pursuing a nursing degree in a state-based undergraduate or graduate nursing degree program. This goes to show that nurses attending state schools can receive ample support from their state governments.

Colleges and universities are extremely financially supportive towards students seeking nursing degrees. The HRSA have distributes ample funding to many universities and nursing schools to offer students financial assistance through the Advanced Education Nursing Grants Program. Leading schools that provide this grant include Atlantic University, University of Florida-Gainesville, University of Miami, and the University of South Florida.
